Welcome to Southwood
History
The wood is classified as Ancient Woodland by Natural England, which means that it has been wooded since at least 1600. We know almost nothing about the history yet, but already we have found several platforms cut into the hillside that are almost certainly old charcoal-makers' hearths. The wide presence of old hazel coppice stools is strong evidence that this and other Taw Valley woods were once extensively worked for charcoal and probably other timber products.
Initial attempts to find out more about the history of charcoal-making and other woodland products in Devon and in the Taw Valley have not found out very much. Some limited research has been published about charcoal-making to the south around Dartmoor. We would like to know more and when we do produce some information boards for visitors.
